AND OUR CHOCOLATE
EXTREMIST WINNER IS...
Laura Sanderson
I’ve always been a fan of chocolate, but sought to restrain my passion so protect my waistline. When I met the man who is now my husband, he quickly figured out the key to my heart. We were in Japan where bizarre flavours and packaging are the norm, and he succeeded in buying me every kind of Kit Kat produced during that year, including lemon cheesecake, green tea and cappuccino. The trend continued during our courtship in England where he lovingly bought me 120 Cadbury crème eggs when they were on sale after Easter, and simply smiled when I spent the next several months happily munching my way through them all.
Two major events then changed my chocolate life forever: He proposed (I accepted!), and I discovered Gu. Although the proposal was more important, Gu soon proved to be crucial to our relationship. Given a variety of circumstances in the lead up to the wedding, I found myself hoarding chocolate for emergencies. Soon he was tucking chocolate into my handbag before every visit to his parents’ house, and Gu was stocked in the fridge for really bad nights. Although was now seven months, I am still finishing off the bag of ‘emergency chocolate’ which, quite honestly, was nearly as important as his unwavering support in those final months.
Though I rely on my chocolate crutch less and less now, I still buy every new Gu product just so I’ve tried it, even if it’s simply different packaging. With every day we’re married I love my husband all the more, not least because every time we fly on Virgin Atlantic, he tucks his Gu away so it can be a special present later just for me. I don’t love chocolate as much as my husband, but I think he’d argue that there are some days when chocolate makes me as happy as he does.
